November 2010...

It's been a massive month for the man of metal with live gigs from Motorhead, Skunk Anansie, WASP, Witchfynde, Dawn Trader to name just five. with all the fireworks out the way at the beginning of November it's that annual onslaught of Christmas cheer to come, I tend to lock myself away with a mince pie and a bottle of brandy... Barrr Humbug!

Motörhead… Assembly Rooms… Derby… 15/11/10…
First off a word or three about tonight’s venue, it’s thirty years since I first went to a gig at Derby assembly rooms three decades ago the great hall of this then brand new building played host to the likes of Saxon, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Hawkwind, Slade, Krokus, Girlschool, Def Lepard, Scorpions, Blackfoot, Thin Lizzy, Diamond Head and of course Motörhead all of which yours truly attended. By the mid eighties the assembly rooms had taken a back seat as a premier rock venue and I’ve always wondered why because it’s a perfect setting and has a 2000 capacity. In the early part of the noughties the fledgling Bloodstock festival began it’s life here before going ‘open air’, today however it plays host to few rock concerts The likes of Jethro Tull and Hawkwind have played it in recent times but it’s back to 2004 since I was last here, on that occasion it was Whitesnake gracing the stage.
Tonight the mighty Motörhead have deemed it fitting to play Derby as part of their European tour which just happens to be their thirty fifth anniversary and with a nearly full assembly rooms it’s like the sands of time have simply rolled back to the eighties.
First up this evening are Skew Siskin from Germany they’ve been around since the early 1990’s, fronted by Nina C. Alice Skew Siskin have collaborated with Motörhead’s Lemmy many times over the years, the Teutonic hard rockers are having a tough time getting the crowd going here in Derby but most of the crowd have either yet to get here or are at the bar fuelling up.
By the time the second support of the night are on stage the great hall has filled up somewhat, Michael Monroe the Hanoi Rocks front man has cobbled together a band which features rock luminaries Ginger from the Wildhearts (sporting a broken foot) and Steve Conti from the New York Dolls on guitars, Karl Rosqvist (Danzig) on drums and former Hanoi Rocks bassist Sami Yaffa. Playing a set of covers and Hanoi Rocks originals, Michael Monroe, the flying Finn defies his age and clambers all over the place enthusing the audience with his legendary front man prowess. Finishing off his hit and miss set with the anthemic dead jail or rock n’ roll Mr. Monroe is nothing if not entertaining and we haven’t seen the last of him this evening.
It all started thirty five years ago for Motörhead and when founding band member Ian Fraser ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister who will be celebrating his sixty fifth birthday next month walks on stage and say’s “we are Motörhead and we play rock n’ roll” everyone takes note. Opening with we are Motörhead from the self named album of 2000 the pace of the show is now set. Stay clean and Metropolis from the 1979 album overkill feature early on while both rock out and the thousand names of god from their last studio album Motörizer are also included in the set. Next month will see Motörhead release a brand new studio album in the form the world is yours as a sampler of that disc we are treated to the songs get back in line and I know how to die both of which go down well with the Derby crowd. Skew Siskin’s Nina C. Alice retakes the stage to help Lemmy out with the vocal duties on killed by death and after the all time classic song ace of spades which even people that don’t like heavy metal love it’s time for the ever young Michael Monroe to re-emerge into the lime light to sing born to raise hell the first of two encores tonight. With ears buzzing the Derby faithful see Motörhead finish on another all time classic, the first vinyl of Motörhead’s I ever bought back in 79, overkill… Only way to feel the noise is when it's good and loud, So good you can't believe it's screaming with the crowd, Don't sweat it, get it back to you… If you like your metal fast n’ loose don’t miss Motörhead on this tour… GD.
